Montesardo – a hamlet of Alessano

Montesardo is a charming hamlet of the municipality of Alessano laying on the hill of about 180 meters above sea level. It is considered one of the oldest inhabited settlements in the Capo di Leuca region.
The origins of Montesardo date back to the Messapian era, as evidenced by the presence of a massive megalithic wall known as the Messapian Walls of Montesardo, dating from the 4th–3rd century BC. These still partially visible fortifications were likely part of a defensive and commercial settlement.

During the Roman times and Early Medieval periods Montesardo continued to hold importance, thanks to its location along the Via Salentina- an ancient road that connected the Ionian and Adriatic ports. Its name “Montesardo” appears in medieval documents and is believed to derive from the Latin Mons Arduus, meaning “steep hill”.
In the Middle Ages Montesardo became a fortified center- home to a castle and several churches. Among them the Church of Sant’Antonio Abate stands out with its modest yet impressive façade.
